Ear and Nose Waxing – Here’s the Scoop!

The pesky thing about hair is that it doesn’t always grow where you want it to grow – balding men will know what I am talking about. Moreover, it tends to grow in awkward places where you would rather it didn’t. That is when professional beauty salons and high-quality products come to the rescue with ear and nose waxing treatments.

Experts agree that the most efficient way to remove unwanted hair is by waxing with a premium quality depilatory wax, such as Harley Wax. For areas that are hard to see or reach yourself, it is best practice to get your treatment done by a skilled professional at a salon that stocks Harley Wax products. Two of these areas are the ears and nostrils. Hairy ears and nostrils are most often affect men, usually as they grow older. While not many statistics exist on the subject. A study published in the 1984 New England Journal of Medicine found that roughly 74 percent of men experience unsightly ear hair.

Scientists are not entirely sure what causes the phenomenon of excessive ear and nose hair growth. Some believe it might be related to an increase of testosterone in men as they age. Ear hair occurs more frequently in certain ethnicities, for example, among Indian men. There are various ways to remove ear and nose hair. However, beauty aficionados agree that waxing with a high-quality product is by far the best way to go. There are several reasons for this, including that waxing has long-lasting results, and it is quick and efficient, removing most hairs in one application.

How does ear and nose waxing work?

Waxing the ears and nostrils is relatively simple once you get the hang of it, but you need to be able to see what you are doing. One should be lying down for an ear waxing treatment, as it is almost impossible to complete it while looking in a mirror. This makes it a tricky task and one best left to professionals with a clear view of the process. An optimal ear waxing treatment should go as follows:

  • Ensure the wax is at the correct heat and consistency. This ensures optimal results and maximum client comfort. The wax should be slightly cooler than your normal working temperature to ensure it does not drip on application.
  • Apply a dollop of wax onto the spatula.
  • Place it into the client’s ear and turn it quickly.
  • Squeeze the ear closed around the stick with your thumb and forefinger until it hardens.
  • Let the wax dry for a few minutes, longer than you would leave it when waxing other parts of the body.
  • Once the wax has solidified fully, once again pinch the ear around the stick with your thumb and forefinger.
  • Pull out the stick as quickly as possible with the other hand, maintaining pressure as you remove it.
  • Continue pinching the ear for several seconds to minimise discomfort.
  • Check the ear for any wax residue or remaining hairs – and that’s it!

A nose waxing treatment goes very similarly to ear waxing. Like the ears, wax in the nostrils may take slightly longer to set than on other areas of the body. This is because the nasal passages are closed areas that trap body heat. However, there are a few significant differences:

  • You need to use a thinner waxing spatula.
  • Always remove any piercings before the treatment.
  • Cover the moustache and beard area with a paper towel to ensure you remove only the nasal hairs and the wax does not spill over.

Which product is best for ear and nose waxing treatments?

To optimise waxing results, you should always use high-quality wax, such as Harley Wax. This is particularly important when waxing more delicate areas, such as the bikini line, moustache, ears, and nostrils. The Harley Film Wax Range is ideal for ear and nostril waxing because it melts at a low heat and dries incredibly quickly. Our Film Wax Range is available in both chunks and beads. Additionally, we strongly recommend using the Harley Pre-Waxing Cleanser & Toner to ensure you adequately sanitise the area prior to waxing.

Why it is important to choose waxing as opposed to alternative hair removal methods?

There are several reasons to rather choose waxing rather than trim, laser or tweeze. Firstly, you only need to wax once a month, and almost all hair is removed in a single application. Many people use electric razors to trim ear and nasal hairs. However, the process needs to be performed frequently, every few days at least, to be sustainable. Additionally, these devices can damage the nasal septum and ear canal/eardrum when used incorrectly. Scissors can be equally risky.

Plucking is painful and time-consuming. It can open the hair follicles up for infection when you execute it with unsanitsed tweezers.

Finally, Lasering is an excellent option for people with extremely dark hair and money to burn. However, it is expensive and requires a series of treatments over time. Additionally, its effectivity wanes exponentially in lighter hairs because the laser requires melanin to conduct it to the root of the hair, which makes the laser hair removal process effective.

On the other hand, ear- and nose-waxing is quick, easy, affordable and you only need to do it once a month. Many people don’t even think about ear and nose waxing as a solution; some don’t even realise it is an option. It is the perfect way to keep your ears and nostrils hair free for up to six weeks. However, if you decide to go the waxing root, we suggest going to a salon where experienced therapists will take care of you. Look for a salon that stocks high-quality Harley Wax for the most comfortable waxing experience and optimal results. After all, you should perhaps not try sticking hot wax into your ears or nose at home!
